While some jobs require an associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree or another kind of credential, many well-paying positions do not require a post-secondary degree. Some of these roles require completion of a certificate program, vocational training or apprenticeship, and others will provide on-the-job training.

14 High Paying Jobs Without a Degree Requirement

National Average Salary: $13.56 per hour

Requirements: You must have completed your high school diploma or equivalent, EMT basic training and pass a national or state certification exam. Some employers may require advanced training.

Primary job duties: An EMT, or paramedic, must quickly respond to medical emergency calls, provide immediate care to injured and ill people and transport patients to hospitals or other medical facilities.

National Average Salary: $13.79 per hour

Requirements: You must have completed your high school diploma or equivalent. Some employers offer mandatory on-the-job training toward a certificate program.

Primary job duties: A dispatcher is someone who assigns mobile workers to vehicles and customers, answer calls and communicates messages with mobile workers to ensure an efficient and timely response. Dispatchers may work in the medical emergency, transportation or commercial services.

National Average Salary: $14.33 per hour

Requirements: You must have completed your high school diploma or equivalent. Some optician positions require you to complete certification programs while others may also require an associate’s degree.

Primary job duties: An optician is someone who helps fit people for eyeglasses, contact lenses and other corrective eyewear using prescriptions from optometrists or ophthalmologists. They usually help people choose frames based on a customer’s needs and lifestyle, and provide advice on eyewear maintenance and care.

National Average Salary: $15.35 per hour

Requirements: You must have completed your high school diploma or equivalent and pass a reading speed and accuracy test. Employers provide training on the job.

Primary job duties: Receive and sort letters and packages, examine mail for proper postage, place mail in racks and bags, cash money orders, sell postage, rent post office boxes and provide other types of assistance to post office customers.

National Average Salary: $30,250 per year

Requirements: You must have completed your high school diploma or equivalent. Some employers may also require additional certifications.

Primary job duties: Flight attendants greet passengers and assist to their seat, ensure passenger safety compliance and demonstrate the use of safety equipment, serve food and beverages throughout the flight, administer first aid and provide instruction in the case of an emergency. They also work to make sure emergency equipment is functional and clean the cabin between flights.

National Average Salary: $36,482 per year

Requirements: You must complete a cosmetology training program and obtain a license in the state you wish to work. Some employers may require additional industry courses or certifications.

Primary job duties: Stylists and barbers cut and color hair, perform scalp treatments, provide shave services and style real and synthetic hair. They also educate clients about hair care and offer advice on styling habits and products.

National Average Salary: $18.68 per hour

Requirements: You must have completed your high school diploma or equivalent, complete a vocational education program and earn a certificate from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). Most employers will offer specific on-the-job training, too.

Primary job duties: A mechanic inspects and tests vehicles, provide preventive maintenance like oil changes and tune-ups, diagnoses automobile concerns and completes repairs.

National Average Salary: $41,449 per year

Requirements: You must have completed your high school diploma or equivalent, be at least 18 years of age, have a driver’s license in the state where you will work, pass written and physical tests and complete fire academy training. Some states may also require firefighters to earn an EMT license.

Primary job duties: Firefighters respond to fires, car accidents, floods, chemical spills and other emergency situations on a moment’s notice to rescue humans and animals and protect the general public. When they’re not on a call, on-duty firefighters work to keep the station and equipment cleaned, maintained and ready for use.

National Average Salary: $22.70 per hour

Requirements: You must have completed your high school diploma or equivalent, be at least 18 years of age, complete plumbing in-class training, have completed a plumbing apprenticeship and earned a plumber’s license in the state where you plan to work. Some employers may also require completion of additional industry certifications.

Primary job duties: A plumber is a professional who installs pipes, sinks, toilets and other fixtures for liquids and gases. Plumbers review blueprints and building specifications to ensure proper placement of pipes and drainage systems.

National Average Salary: $23.00 per hour

Requirements: You must have completed your high school diploma or equivalent, be at least 18 years of age, have a driver’s license in the state where you will work, complete electrician in-class training, have completed an apprenticeship and earned an electrician license in the state where you plan to work. Some employers may also require completion of specific classes and additional industry certifications.

Primary job duties: Electricians install, inspect and maintain electrical systems. They also work to identify electrical issues and repair and replace wiring, fixtures, transformers, circuit breakers and other equipment.

National Average Salary: $26.92 per hour

Requirements: You must complete a certification in massage therapy in a program recognized by the licensing board in the state you wish to practice.

Primary job duties: A massage therapist massages a client’s soft tissues and joints to reduce stress, soothe pain or injuries, improve blood circulation and promote relaxation. They may examine muscle issues and work with clients to devise ongoing therapy plans.

National Average Salary: $60,520 per year

Requirements: You must have completed your high school diploma or equivalent. Some employers may also require the completion of additional industry certifications.

Primary job duties: A railroad conductor communicates with engineers, traffic control personnel and any other crew members, keeps and maintains schedules and shipping records and checks trains for proper weight distribution.

National Average Salary: $67,464 per year

Requirements: You must have completed your high school diploma or equivalent, be at least 23 years old, obtain a commercial pilot license, obtain a first-class medical certificate and pass flight airline-specific exams.

Primary job duties: An airline pilot is a professional who transports people and cargo via aircraft along planned routes, operates and monitors aircraft instruments, communicates with air traffic control, checks aircraft condition and weight before flights and adheres to safety regulations.

National Average Salary: $77,121 per year

Requirements: You must have completed your high school diploma or equivalent, and most positions require at least some experience in the casino or legal gambling industry.

Primary job duties: A gaming manager oversees casino employees and operations, hires and trains casino employees, greets guests and handles customer feedback and complaints.
